Edwin Moses bateu o record quatro vezes e venceu 122 finais,

107 das quais consecutivas, num período de 10 anos.

A sua técnica infalível era dar sempre 13 passadas entre cada barreira,

ao contrário das 14 que habitualmente os outros atletas dão,

conseguindo afastar-se dos seus rivais a partir da

segunda metade da corrida, enquanto mudavam a passada.

O senhor das barreiras ganhou duas medalhas olímpicas de ouro

e 2 Campeonatos do Mundo de Atletismo.

Reformou-se aos 32 anos, com uma medalha de bronze em Seul.

The Serial Killer - Part XX

Considered to be the first real american serial killers, my colleagues, the Harpe Brothers operated between the 1780s and the 1790s. They prefered the roads and the rivers, murdering people in Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Mississippi. They weren't vulgar robbers and they seemed to enjoy the killing more than the money they stole.
Their blood lust seems to have started with the influence of the renegade Creek and Cherokee Indians with whom they lived and who committed atrocities against white settlers and their own tribes. Their killing method was to rip open the bodies of their victims and drown them with the aid of stones. They butchered anyone at the slightest provocation, even babies. R.E. Banta in The Ohio claims that Micajah Harpe even bashed his infant daughter's head against a tree because her constant crying annoyed him. This was the only crime for which he would later confess genuine remorse, though.
In July 1799 John Leiper raised a posse to avenge the murder of Mrs. Stegal, including Moses Stegal, the victim's husband. Leiper reached Harpe first, and managed to shoot Big Harpe. After a scuffle with a tomahawk, Leiper overcame Harpe. When Stegal arrived, he decapitated Harpe and stuck his head on a pole, at a crossroads still known as "Harpe's Head" or Harpe's Head Road in Webster County, Kentucky.
By the end of their reign of terror, the "Bloody Harpes" were responsible for the known murders of no less than 40 men, women, and children. Little Harpe eluded the authorities for some time, using the alias John Setton, until allegedly being caught in an effort to get a reward of his own on the head of an outlaw, Samuel Mason. He was captured in 1803, tried and hanged on February 8, 1804.

Of course the Harpe Brothers are much more similar to the modern serial killers, such as me, than the majority of the previous killers presented here. There is a distinguishable feature in their crimes, apart from the sadistic nature of their killings, that is unmistakably common to all modern serial killers - the randomness and the geographical mobility.

É um ícone, maior que o próprio desporto que representava.

Foi cantado e mencionado em filmes como

provavelmente mais nenhum outro desportista.

Casou com outro ícone durante algum tempo,

a maior de todas, Marilyn.

Nesta fotografia conseguimos cheirar o passado.

E, ao mesmo tempo, por um qualquer mistério

indescritível, ela parece tão actual.

gostam de dizer. DiMaggio foi um "center-fielder"

que jogou durante toda a sua carreira

pelos New York Yankees. Detém um record extraordinário de

56 jogos consecutivos com pelo menos uma rebatida,

record que nunca mais ninguém lhe conseguiu bater.

Quando se reformou era o quinto jogador com maior número

de "home runs" conseguidos.

O sonho de qualquer miúdo americano é ser o próximo

DiMaggio, mas ele ainda está para nascer.

Another symbol of female aggression. In the mid-to-late 1700s, Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova is purported to have killed over 100 of her serfs. Her victims tended to be young women or girls and always serfs of her estate, which had been inherited from her husband after his death. The deaths by Darya were largely ignored due to her position of power and friendship with those within the royal courts of Russia until her arrest in 1762.
Following the investigation of over 100 suspicious deaths, she was found guilty of 38. The death penalty had been abolished in Russia at the time of her conviction and so she was displayed publicly with a sign around her neck, and then sent to life in prison.

Now to the how's and why's.

Saltykova was held for six years while the authorities conducted a painstaking investigation. They questioned many witnesses and examined the records of the Saltykova estate, counting as many as 138 suspicious deaths, of which the vast majority were attributed to the noblewoman.
She was found guilty of having killed 38 female serfs by beating and torturing them to death.
In 1768, Saltykova was chained on a platform in Moscow for one hour, with a sign around her neck with the text: "This woman has tortured and murdered." Many people came to look at her during the hour she was displayed. Afterward, she was sent to imprisonment for life in the basement of Ivanovsky Convent in Moscow. She was buried next to her relatives in the Donskoy Monastery necropolis.

As to the why, I can only think of one very mundane reason - Darya was a bored noble woman who had no occupation and lots of money. It was an amusement to her, perhaps even a way of avenging the labor life she eventually and paradoxically might envy in her serfs, who probably led much more interesting lives.

One is never happy with what one has ...

Carlos Lopes chega ao estádio olímpico de Los Angeles, completamente sozinho,

deixando para trás todos os seus adversários. Tinha 37 anos.

Nesta fotografia conseguimos perceber a sua determinação em vencer.

Ao mesmo tempo, impressiona pela combinação entre

uma certa fragilidade física da parte superior do corpo

e a força muscular das pernas, em forma absoluta.

Carlos Lopes foi o nosso herói. Lembro-me de estar de férias no Algarve

e de a minha mãe nos ir acordar para vermos o final da Maratona.

"Venham depressa! Está a acabar. O Carlos Lopes vai ganhar!"

Foi uma emoção enorme. Era a primeira vez que um português

ganhava uma medalha de ouro olímpica.

Carlos Lopes era, de acordo com Moniz Pereira, o seu treinador

e o co-responsável pela sua vitória, o corredor mais completo do seu tempo,

o melhor do mundo.

Era tão bom no terreno, como em pista, como em cross.

O seu record - 2h9m21s - só foi batido 24 anos mais tarde, em Pequim.

Naquele dia, quando Lopes entrou completamente sozinho no estádio,

todos nós chorámos e sorrimos.

Não queríamos acreditar, mas era verdade.

The Serial Killer - Part XVIII

Thug Behram is our next subject. He was the gang leader of the Indian Thuggee cult of assassins, and is said to be the world's most prolific serial killer. According to numerous sources, he was believed to have murdered 931 victims by means of strangulation with a ceremonial cloth between 1790 and 1830, before being hanged in 1840.
One of the weapons of death was a type of cummerbund with a medallion sewn into the center of it. Thug was said to be so proficient with the weapon that he would land the medallion upon the adams apple of his victims, adding pressure to the throat when he strangled them. The Medallion is now being held in a private museum in India.
The English word 'Thug' is in fact borrowed from the word 'Thuggee', although the use of the word today differs from the true reality of the 'Thuggee'. The 'Thuggee' were covert and operated as a member of a group, and the term typically referred to the killing of a large number of people in a single operation. This distinguished the term from simple armed robbery as they would target groups of travellers and kill them in one go, before taking their possessions.

Again, Thug is perhaps more of a religious killer than a serial one.

We proceed with another female killer, Marie-Madeleine-Marguerite d'Aubray, who conspired with her lover, army captain Godin de Sainte-Croix to poison her father Antonine Dreux d'Aubray in 1666 and two of her brothers, Antoine d'Aubray and Francois d'Aubray, in 1670, in order to inherit their estates. There were also rumors that she had poisoned poor people during her visits to hospitals. I can only think that she might have been trying the poison to see if it really worked, before using it on her main victims.

As her predecessor, she appears to have used Tofana poison, whose recipe she seems to have learned from her lover, who had in turn learned it from Exili, an Italian poisoner, his cellmate in the Bastille. In 1675, after her lover died, she fled to England, Germany, and a convent, but was arrested in Liège. She was forced to confess and sentenced to death. On 17 July 1676, she was tortured with the water cure, that is, forced to drink sixteen pints of water. She was then beheaded and her body was burned at the stake. Her trial and the attendant scandal launched the Affair of the Poisons, which saw several French aristocrats charged with poison and witchcraft.

The only thing that makes Marie-Madeleine a candidate to serial killing is her hospital tryouts, but I should note that it takes much more than that to make a serial killer, as I think we all agree upon by now.
