When we look at the individual development of serial killers, we find two common factors in most cases: a systematic abuse during childhood, wether physical (30%), psychological (69%) or sexual (40%); and the existence of a fantasy life.

The majority of these murderers highlight the importance of a fantasy life based on aggressive thoughts and a ritual that blends death with sex. All of them mentioned prefering their ghosts to real life. They also reveal a high degree of egocentrism and they do not recall the existence of any positive ghosts during their childhood. It is hard to know if those positive ghosts even existed, if they were buried beneath negative thoughts or if they are totally absent from their minds. More than half of them claim they were already disturbed with rape fantasies before the age of 18 and 21% actually fulfilled those fantasies less than a year after they became conscious of them.
When asked to list their sexual preferences, the results were as follows:

sadomasochism 39%
exhibitionism 25%
bestiality 23%
obscen phone calls 22%
transvestism 17%
prostitution 11%
coprophagy 7%
As we can see, all of these sexual expressing forms are of a solitude nature. When asked about the preparation for their crimes, they insist on the importance of these fantasies. They recognize that after the first murder they became greatly absorbed and frequentely excited by the memory of the act, which helped feed the fantasies concerning following crimes.
